Ducks 12-2 through first half of season

By Isaac Rosenthal

For oregonduckshockey.com
After a disappointing finish to the 2009-2010 campaign, the Ducks are once again atop the Pac-8 conference with an 11-1 record in conference play (12-2 overall).

With a defensive-minded Eddie LeRoy behind the bench, the Ducks have allowed two or fewer goals in all but two conference games, including a pair of shutouts recorded by senior goaltender Jack Barry. The Ducks were also credited with two 1-0 wins versus Stanford because the Cardinal were forced to retroactively forfeit because of a violation of Pac-8 rules.

While the defense has been stellar, the Ducks offense has been scoring in bunches. The Ducks have netted five or more goals in eight games. The goals have been coming from all four lines, and every player who has skated in all 12 games has at least one point to his name.

In their lone non-conference series, the Ducks split a pair of games with Western Washington losing 3-0 on Dec. 3 but responding the next night with a 3-2 win.

Ducks come from behind in third period to beat USC, 3-2

Trailing 2-1 going in to the third period on Saturday, Nov. 20, Oregon stormed back with goals from Justin Lacasse to tie it and Sam Jossie to take the lead with less than five minutes remaining. The Ducks held on to that lead, taking the game and sweeping the home-opening weekend series against USC. Photos and game summaries coming soon.

Friday, Nov. 19 result- Oregon 7, USC O

The Ducks took it to the Trojans with a whopping 7-0 shutout in their homeopener Friday night. Jack Barry was bossy, turning aside shot after shot to record his second shutout of the year.

Oregon goes 3-1 on four game roadtrip

Nov. 10-Oregon 10, Cal 1

Nov. 11- Oregon 13, Cal 2

Nov. 12- Oregon 3, Stanford 0

Nov. 13-Stanford 6, Oregon 5

After two consecutive weeks without games, the Ducks kicked off the four game roadtrip against Cal with two strong wins but the heavy schedule caught up with them. Oregon rode the shoulders of goalie Jack Barry on Saturday to a 3-0 victory over Stanford but the fatigue of four games in four days showed in the third period of the final game of the weekend as Stanford rallied late for a 6-5 win.

Ducks pick up pair of big wins over UCLA

For OregonDucksHockey.com

The Ducks did it again. This time, it was 23 Goals for and only three goals against. You would think that would be something you would hear from the Oregon Duck club lacrosse team, not a hockey game.
UCLA played 2 periods with the Ducks this weekend, both coming in the opening frames of Friday and Saturday's contests. Friday the Ducks were stymied to only one goal in the first period after the Bruins came out hard and physical.
The handful of Ducks’ fans in attendance saw the Ducks take charge in the 2nd period with three different lines contributing a total of four goals, including a one timer in the slot by sophomore Sam Jossie from senior Erik Brody. Senior Goalie Jack Barry had some moments of sheer brilliance, including stuffing the Bruins leading scorer Daniel Vaynter on a penalty shot.

" I really read his mail on that one. I think we should tell him he's the new lemon" - Sr Goalie Jack Barry

(The team likes to keep a light mood going into weekends by playing a game referred to as the "lemon game." This Oregon tradition started last year at the end of every Wednesday night practice with a penalty shot competition. The consequence for not scoring? The last player who does not score has to take a huge bite out of a freshie-ripe lemon and don the matching pink jersey and socks to the next two on-ice practices. With the cost of shipping a jersey and socks in mind, the Ducks might spare Vaytner the pain of such a burden.)
Saturday night began as a repeat of Friday night with the UCLA squad pressuring hard in the offensive zone, not allowing the Duck players much time to move the puck. With the score still tied 0-0 midway through the first period, the Ducks finally broke through with one quick shot from the "Tickles Krew" as well as the "Pup n Suds aka Hussleholics" line of senior left wing Jeff Kraus. Senior center Erik Brody and sophomore Sam Jossie catalyzed the offense with a pair of breakaways, bringing the score to 3-0 through two. With the team buzzing off some key goals and hard play, pucks seem to move through the Bruin goaltender as if he was Swiss cheese, a Ducks player noted.
Plays of the night: In the 1st: "4th" line of Freshman Stephen Casey Jr., Michael Hale, and Sophomore Kyle "Todd" Lederer on a sweet tic tac toe play in front of the UCLA net that left the Bruin defenders looking like pylons; in the 2nd: Sr captain defender Dougo Reese, who slid into the blue line with a roaring slapshot to the top right corner of the net; in the 3rd: Lederer with a spin-o-rama to slam home the green meat. Honorable mention: Justin Lacasse returned from suspension to score the 15th goal of the game.
Coaches Edward LeRoy and Assistant Rich Salahor were pleased with the showing of the young squad as it was "a step for our team, to play 60 full minutes of disciplined hockey."
Saturday's score was mainly contributed to the Ducks ongoing attitude of never giving up until the clock reads 0:00. Oregon understands that in these Pac-8 games, impressive wins throughout the season could mean a trip to the ACHA D-II Regional Tournament. The team finished a mere two spots from a berth in the Western Regional post-season last year. Finishing number 12 is something of the past, as the Ducks are moving forward and looking to make a serious push for that final number 10 spot.
The Ducks will drive up to Seattle next weekend with the Pac-8 Runner Up Washington Huskies eagerly awaiting their I-5 Cup foes at Olympic View Ice.

Weekend Notes:

Friday: (8-0) McBride(2), Trihey, Jossie, Peters, Wolfson, Krauss, Rice
Jack Barry gets the W between the pipes.
Saturday: (15-2) Krauss (2), Reese (2), Lederer (2), Casey (2), Rice, Jossie, Brody, LaCasse, Hale, Wolfson, Trihey. Chris Takla receives 2nd win of season.

Oregon wins big over WSU, weekend recap

  By Erik Brody
The Oregon Ducks traveled to eastern Washington this past weekend to take on a WSU Cougar team eager to build on last year’s trying season behind current coach Chris Soriano. If the first 10 minutes of the 1st game were any indication to how the rest of the season will end up for WSU then they might be in for a world of hurt.
Oregon overpowered the struggling Washington State squad with a 9-1 win the first night in Cheney, Washington and then an 8-0 shutout on Saturday night in Spokane
The Ducks’ offense took 25 shots in the opening period and only allowed 9, while scoring 5 goals with a number of shots ringing off the posts.
Oregon entered the second period with a 5-0 lead, and seemed a little complacent, tying the 2nd period 1-1. But Oregon shutout the Cougars in the third and added three more goals.
The final buzzer didn’t sound until nearly 1:30 a.m., but the Ducks had done all the damage they needed. Senior Kevin Trihey recorded the Ducks first hat trick of the season for the Ducks.
The late night meant a quick turnaround for both teams, and the second night’s score really wasn’t much different. The Ducks walked into the barn at Spokane racking up two goals in the first, two in the second, and four in the third. Junior Zach Peters and Freshman Pat Thornton put on a display of the Ducks physical prowess, coming up with two big hits in the third period, pleasing the small crowd of Oregon fans in attendance Saturday night.
Oregon jumps into the 2010-11 season with a chip on its shoulder after falling to rival USC last year in the Pac-8 Semi Finals last year in the last minute, having to settle for a 3rd place match-up against the ASU Sun Devils, in which they won.
Coming off only two on-ice practices together, the young Duck squad came out and performed well in the teams eyes, considering that the coaches had little time to foster chemistry and practice systems.
Oregon faces a much tougher task will come this coming weekend as the Ducks travel by bus to UCLA to take on the 1-2 Bruins and their goal scorer Daniel Vayntner. The puck drops at 8:30 Friday and Saturday nights at the Valley Ice Center in Panorama City on Van Nuys Blvd.
By the numbers
* 17-1 weekend score - Biggest differential since the Stanford home series of last year
* 12 different goal scorers over the weekend
* Justin Lacasse given DQ at end of 1st game (not allowed to play in 2nd game)
* Jack Barry records first shutout of the 2010-11 season
* 10 new rookies on this year’s squad
*  Edward G. Leroy records 1st victory as Head Coach for Oregon

Senior Kevin Trihey pumped up the team on the bus to Cheney before the season opener with a recital of Taylor Swift quotes. His favorite? " I'm intimidated by the fear of being average"
