Ducks Downed by Sun Devils, 8-2
EUGENE — In the first of a two-game series, the visiting Arizona State Sun Devils felled the Oregon Ducks on Friday night, 8-2.
The Sun Devils earned the first goal of the evening, 12:01 into the opening frame. Deep in the Ducks’ zone on a power-play, Scott Hanson controlled the puck at the right wall and rimmed it around the boards to a waiting Wyatt Dodson behind the net. An undefended Dodson brought the puck short-side and lifted it top corner to put his team up 1-0. Despite several chances for Oregon, the score would stand into the intermission.
Although the first two goals of the second period would belong to the visitors, their lead was halved at 17:20 on a goal from assistant captain Derek Armstrong. Kiernan Gillooley collected the puck at the blue line and shoveled it up to Armstrong down low. Armstrong skated the puck around the net and threw it on net from the right circle where it hit a post and found twine. Unfortunately, Arizona State would score a goal of their own 27 seconds later, and the Ducks would go into the third period down 4-2.
The night did not improve on the scoreboard for the hosts. The Sun Devils would go on to score another four goals during the third period, leading to a final score of 8-2.
The Ducks will have a chance at redemption tomorrow at 7 p.m. when they face the Sun Devils again at The Rink Exchange. Tickets are available for purchase at the door.
