By: Nathan Garcia
MEDFORD, Ore. -- The Oregon Ducks opened their 2021-2022 season in Medford, taking on Pac-8 rivals Cal Berkeley. Oregon has had Cal’s number the last two years, beating them in the 2018- 2019 Pac-8 championship game and sweeping them in 2019-2020. Three freshmen would score along the way to give the Ducks a 5-2 win to open the season.
The first goal of the year was scored by a new Duck, freshman Jimmy Gagan, who finished off a pretty back-door pass from Jack Geraghty to make it 1-0 (9:27).
Fellow freshman Nick Slayton would follow, throwing the puck on net and getting a lucky bounce in front to make the game 2-1 going into the 2nd period (0:10).
Cal would score a powerplay goal midway through the 2nd to tie the game at 2-2 (12:56).
From there on out it was all Ducks. Austin Charnholm would rip home a one-timer from the top of the circle to give the Ducks a 3-2 lead going into the 3rd (4:19).
In the 3rd, the freshman goal-scoring party continued as Liam Baird finished off a two on one going top shelf to make it 4-2 (8:54).
Connor Rendell would put things out of reach late in the 3rd to make it a 5-2 game (1:05).
Freshman goalie Henry Bradford would get the win in net.
